Risk Management Education: The “Resource Rodeos”

RAFI’s Resource Rodeo events are part of a broader project to identify and address risk management needs of small and mid-scale farmers, including minority, women and/or limited resource farmers transitioning to new, value-added means of production, marketing and distribution. We focus on the financial and legal risks of new farm ventures, and the strategies and federal programs available to help farmers manage risk.

Through six regional workshops held in 2012 and 2013, we provided information, education, and tools farmers can use to conduct a simple risk management self-assessment and take steps to manage the risks they’ve identified.

At our Resource Rodeos, resource providers from government agencies and nonprofit organizations such as the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), AgCarolina Credit, The Support Center, Land Loss Prevention Project, and Carolina Farm Stewardship Association explain their services to an audience of farmers, advocates, and other providers.

Funded by a generous grant from the Southern Risk Management Education Center (SRMEC), our Resource Rodeos have reached farmers and resource providers across North Carolina.
