Rebecca T. de Souza’s (Ph.D., Purdue University) research is concerned with how political and economic systems impact access to food, health, and social wellbeing.
Her work pays particular attention to the ways in which racism, ethnocentrism, and other oppressive ideologies influence policy, practices, and environments. Dr. de Souza’s critically acclaimed book Feeding the Other: Whiteness, Privilege, and Neoliberal Stigma in Food Pantries (MIT Press, 2019), explores the role of stigma in the lives of food insecure individuals. Her book won the 2021 Outstanding Book Award from the International Communication Association and the 2020 Outstanding Monograph Award from the National Communication Association (Organization Communication Division).
