The impacts of corporate concentration manifest in virtually every sector of our economy today, particularly that of our food system. With each decade, fewer and fewer corporations dominate our food economy, making it less equitable, resilient, and sustainable. From proprietary seed and software companies, overreaching meatpackers, and dwindling competition in grocery retail, corporations continue to monopolize every stage of how food reaches the table. 

A rampant lack of accountability has made it harder than ever to access food that nourishes the people who cultivate it, the people who consume it, and the earth that bears it. When unchecked by regulatory safeguards, corporations wreak havoc on our environment by polluting our air and poisoning our water, distributing low-quality, high-cost food that lacks nutritional value, all while endangering food system workers through hazardous workplace conditions and unlivable wages.  

In order to attain the just and resilient food system that everyone deserves, we must build it. This begins by dismantling the oppressive structures in place that exploit our most basic needs for profit margins. RAFI’s years of experience working in advocacy and policy with rural farming communities have yielded a unique insight into how corporate concentration disproportionately harms those who work closest to the ground in our food economies, and much of our past work has sought to advocate alongside these vulnerable populations.
