Shaisa Soto Ruiz

Farm Name: Unitaria Común

City: Utuado, Puerto Rico

Shaisa’s farm is located in the mountains of the center of the island of Puerto Rico, in the town of Utuado, a rural area very rich in natural resources and economically marginalized by neoliberal metrocentrism. Currently, they grow native vegetables, fruits, and edible roots for family consumption, markets, and a CSA. They also grow fruit trees for the production of fermented drinks, and medicinal plants for the preparation of botanical medicine. With their funds, Shaisa plans to increase vegetable production during the rainy season with the use of a plastic-covered nursery that will be installed on top of a planting bench area.
