Puerto Rico Farmer Resources Coordinator

The Puerto Rico Farmer Resources Coordinator will be the on-the-ground presence for RAFI to work locally with PR-based farmers to access USDA government programs.  The position works in collaboration and local guidance of the Alliance for Agriculture (A4A) staff and works and reports remotely with RAFI staff. The Coordinator will play a vital role in ensuring that RAFI’s farmer-facing services are culturally appropriate, timely, and relevant to farmers on the island.  This position is a grant-funded position with RAFI (FSA and Land Access).The Coordinator is currently funded for four years with anticipated renewal based on grant availability. Candidates must be bilingual, have and build the trust of the agricultural community, and be technically proficient navigating USDA programs. 

Responsibilities

Farmer Direct Service and Technical Assistance

  • Build and expand relationships with Puerto Rican farmers by: assessing farmers’ needs, listening to concerns, presenting options, providing relevant information, supporting the preparation of applications, following up on farmers’ progress, and referring to other staff, organizations, and agencies when necessary. 
  • Provide one-on-one technical assistance to farmers, with a focus on farmers in Puerto Rico [and as needed in the US Virgin Islands], including but not limited to initiating or updating farmer FSA records, assisting with FSA loan applications, and providing advocacy services to farmers in financial distress. Some assistance may be completed during in-person visits if within a reasonable driving distance.
  • Monitor and respond to Spanish-speaking hotline callers and email inquiries, assessing what resources could be helpful to farmer callers and whether they are in an immediate financial crisis and need to be referred to our farm advocate.
  • Record farmer information, technical assistance given, outcome of technical assistance, and other evaluation metrics in Salesforce according to RAFI’s technical assistance procedures and consistent with funding requirements. Work collaboratively with the RAFI Farm Advocacy program and RAFI Direct Service Team to provide comprehensive farmer support and impact tracking.

Partnerships and Agency Relationships

  • Develop relationships, communicate, and coordinate with partner organizations 
  • Seek out professional development opportunities to increase the ability to provide excellent technical assistance to farmers on FSA programs and farm business planning.
  • Develop relationships with FSA regional agencies in the territories and map the pathways of FSA programs locally.
  • Assist with identifying barriers to accessing FSA programs, and train staff on FSA regulations. 
  • Coordinate with mainland-based RAFI staff for internal farmer referrals, direct service work, and relationships with USDA officials. 

Outreach

  • Provide outreach and education to farmers in our networks to ensure they stay updated about current and new initiatives that USDA and FSA are implementing. Inform farmers on developments, and recommend actions they should take such as completing important forms with FSA. 
  • Translate materials for farmers as needed, with the support of contract translation services.

Required skills, knowledge, and abilities: 

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Familiarity with FSA programs, especially loan programs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in agriculture and working with farmers
  • Detail-oriented
  • Exhibits persistence and follow-through
  • Excellent relationship-building capacity
  • Driver’s license (and ability to access transportation)
  • Organized/timely follow-up 
  • Active learner & self-starter; ability to seek information independently, self-educate, and take initiative on projects and work plans.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to work with remote staff
  • Works well within a team environment.

Desired skills, knowledge, and abilities: 

  • Experience working in Salesforce or other CRM
  • Curiosity, intellectual engagement, and an active interest in continual learning

Compensation: 

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Annual salary of $53,561 based on an estimated 40 hours/week schedule. This salary was developed using RAFI’s salary matrix and responsibility tier and is not negotiable.
  • Generous benefits package includes paid time off, 401k, medical, dental, life insurance, and long/short-term disability insurance plans.
