Chirandu Farm LLC, Dickerson, MD

Chirandu Farm is building a barn with a dedicated area for cleaning, packing, and storing produce. The barn will allow them to more effectively process and store their special maize crop and prevent crop loss; it will also act as a shelter for workers and volunteers during the hot summer months.

Bio: Chirandu Farm is a vegetable farm owned and operated by two sisters (Marcey and Precious Guramatunhu) of African heritage/origin. The 26 acre parcel of land that the sisters acquired in August, 2020, is located in the Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve area, Dickerson, Maryland.

The sisters’ are growing a variety of vegetable and other food crops along with some African specialty ethnic food crops using sustainable and regenerative farming practices and methods.  The sisters’ long term goal is to become a certified organic food farm serving the local community as well as the African immigrant community in Maryland and surrounding states. Vegetables from the farm are sold mostly via an onsite farm stand and also via a few grocery stores.  This year the sisters are looking forward to provide fresh produce to food banks and to organizations that cater to immigrant communities.
