Job Opening: Communications Coordinator

(Formerly listed as a part-time position)

Position Summary: The Communications Coordinator works closely with the Communications Manager and Policy team to increase RAFI-USA’s overall visibility and facilitate a strategic flow of relevant, actionable information to its stakeholders: farmers, farm communities, faith communities, coalition partners, journalists, colleagues, elected officials, and others. Primary focus includes coordinating and publishing digital and print communications materials; social media posting and monitoring; and, writing, editing, and designing comms materials.  

Responsibilities by Function 

  • Publications, social media, and collateral creation, coordination, and implementation 
    • Coordinate editorial calendar for social media, e-newsletters, farmer-facing print newsletter, Policy Action Network texts and emails, and other collateral
    • Gather copy and copyedit; follow through to distribution for select projects
    • Create copy and visuals for digital channels 
    • Social media monitoring and response; work to build followers/likes
    • Work with the policy team to create and send grassroots calls to action to Policy Action Network (PAN) members and help build the base of activists; Onboard new Members of PAN, especially farmers, with follow-up reach outs, info collection on their farms, etc.
  • Website maintenance and enhancements
    • Maintain up-to-date website pages, help facilitate new features, assist with website refresh
  • Video and Photography coordination 
    • Coordinate scheduling of external video production firm; assure timelines are being met, communication is clear among all parties, and see through to completion
    • Shoot and edit in-house videos as time permits

Desired skills, knowledge, and abilities: 

  • Interest and passion for being a part of a team of committed individuals contributing to a just and equitable food system
  • Organized, detail-focused, forward-thinking individual who brings solutions, creativity, empathy, and a sense of humor to a dynamic team environment
  • Experience with communications apps and programs including Google Workspace, WordPress, Mailchimp, Salesforce, Google Analytics, Google Adwords, Capitol Canary, Simple Texting, and others; Eagerness to learn programs is valued in cases where there is no prior experience
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, and communications skills, including demonstrated ability to analyze issues, think strategically and communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively to a variety of audiences. Ability to write quickly, within deadlines, and able to condense information to convey it clearly and concisely
  • Experience as an effective online campaigner, using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok,  and other social media platforms 
  • Graphic design experience with programs such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite and the ability to turn graphics around quickly
  • Previous experience in grassroots political, policy, or social media organizing a major plus
  • Spanish language proficiency a plus
  • Basic knowledge of agricultural policy and antitrust issues in agriculture a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and mobilize hard-to-reach populations a plus

Compensation:

Physical Demands: Prolonged stationary periods at a computer

Travel Expectations: Some travel around North Carolina (approx 4-6 times per year) is required. Occasional travel outside the state may be required. Driver’s license required.
