Every (Farmer’s) Vote Counts: Candidate Highlight of Dorathy Barker

In our “Every (Farmer’s) Vote Counts” series, we here at RAFI have been spreading the word about ongoing FSA county committee elections.

Dorothy Barker

As part of our Farmer Leadership Network, we support family farmers to become more involved in the groups that make decisions about their farms and their livelihoods. We are currently supporting a few candidates who are running for their local FSA county committees.

What is your name, and where do you farm?
My name is Dorathy Barker, and we farm in Granville County.

How long have you been farming?
Since 1976.

What kind of farm do you run?
My husband Philip and I have a dairy and vegetable operation.

Why are you running for county committee?
I am running to get the information out to those who need it and to stand up for smaller black farmers, small farmers in general, and the socially disadvantaged.

What do you think qualifies you for the position?
I have over 40 years of farming experience, I am part owner, and I have a long history of farm advocacy for small farmers and farm programs.
