We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and gratitude this month from all of you who nominated a favorite farmer or food hero. It was a tough decision to make, but we had to stick to our word and pick one winner to highlight today.

It’s no secret that a necessary component to what we do is the support we get to do it. Today, we thank our donors for their incredible backing and loyalty as we further advance our mission to cultivate markets, policies and communities that sustain thriving, socially just and environmentally sound family farms.

“As a farmer,” he explained, “you have to learn to be mechanics, electricians and plumbers because you can't afford to hire those folks.”

We feel compelled to take some time to thank our Board of Directors during our month of thanks. We owe our gratitude to their guidance and fresh ideas. Each of our board members boasts a stellar repertoire, which you can read more about.

For a farm family facing hard times because of circumstances out of their control– like a natural disaster or a cut-off chicken contract–the Land Loss Prevention Project provides expert legal assistance that would otherwise be out of their reach.

As the average age of the American farmer rises to almost 60, this young farmer veteran is determined to farm. Our food relies on folks like Gary Purgason. For that, we can’t thank him enough.

A crowd of almost 1,000 people erupted into a standing ovation last week when Stanley Hughes and his wife, Linda Leach, received the 2013 Farmers of the Year award from the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.
