Fuel Alternative for Farm Use—Philip
Renard Barker—Granville County
This project seeks to reduce farm input costs through on-farm production
of bio-diesel. The project will make use of waste cooking oil from
area restaurants as the primary feedstock for making the fuels.
Creating Value-added Products by Dehydration—Doreathy
Booth—Granville County
This project will enable Ms. Booth to add a commercial dehydrator
to her operation. The dehydrator will enable Ms. Booth to capture
the value of excess farm produce and fruit and extend her marketing
season, especially for her table grapes. The dehydrated farm products
will be added to Ms. Booth’s existing line of baked goods,
which she sells at farmers’ markets and to specialty grocery
stores.
North Star Farmers’ Market—Harden Brown—Rockingham
County
This project will provide farmers from northern Rockingham County
with a highly visible, easy access market facility along a busy
commuter corridor. The facility will provide a place for Mr. Brown
and his neighbors to market strawberries, bedding plants, and vegetables
to commuters to Reidsville and Danville, Virginia.
From Pasture to Table—John Council—Hoke County
This project will add-value to an existing pastured-hog operation
by improving capacity for direct market sales giving the Council’s
more of the final income for their product. Through the project,
the Council’s will add a freezer, acquire a meat handler’s
license, and refrigerated transportation that will enable them to
safely market their pork to local residents.
Creating a Roadside Market—Lock Dial—Robeson
County
This project will enable Mr. Dial to further diversify his fruit
and vegetable marketing options by adding roadside sales. The project
will help with construction of an attractive, freestanding shelter.
The shelter will help Mr. Dial extend his marketing season by providing
an outlet for early produce.
Automatic Watering System—Tammy French—Rockingham
County
This project seeks to help the French’s improve the efficiency
of their nursery business by converting their greenhouses to an
automated watering system. The project will allow the French’s
to more efficiently use labor.
Harvest Moon Farms Marketing Expansion—Herbert W.
Griffin—Jones County
This project will assist with expanding the marketing and transportation
capacity of Harvest Moon Farms’ wholesale vegetable operation.
The project will provide of demonstration of how to grow and sell
through wholesale marketing channels.
Processing Facility—Sheila Garner—Carteret County
This project will help to increase revenue from farm raised fruits
and vegetables by developing on-farm processing capacity. The project
will help the Garners turn blemished or excess product into jams,
jellies, cakes, pies, and canned goods for sale to local residents
and tourists. The project will enhance the product offerings at
the Garners’ existing roadside stand.
Increasing Diversity—Burnell and Henry Ivey—Robeson
County
This project seeks to develop agritourism activities focused on
school children at a small Robeson County farm. The project will
help the Ivey’s to develop the capacity to grind food grade
products such as grits and cornmeal. The project will also assist
with marketing for the project including development of print materials
and signs.
CHS Tack and Supply—Carole Moore—Rockingham
County
The project will assist the Moores to replace lost tobacco income
through development of retail sales of farm products related to
their horse boarding and riding facility. The project is to refurbish
an old house to be used as a retail facility for tack and farm supplies.
The facility will provide a high-value outlet for farm products
like hay and grains.
Moore Brothers Beef—Eddie Moore—Robeson
This project will target the high-end meat markets within a 100
mile radius of Red Springs for marketing of farm-raised, “natural”
beef products. The goal is to create brand recognition and demand
for Moore Brothers Beef. The project will work with other area growers
to raise beef in accordance with the Moore Brothers protocol.
Strawberry Marketing Building—Jimmy and Mitzi Powers—Robeson
This project will allow the Powers to expand off of their successful
strawberry business to develop year-round markets for other farm
products. The primary focus of the project is the construction of
a building which provides restroom facilities for u-pick customers
and can become a center for retail sales.
Scott Farm Organics—Trent Scott—Jones County
The Scotts are developing a direct-market, organic vegetable operation
on their Jones County farm. This project will help them to develop
and market certified organic vegetables from the farm and to consumers
in the New Bern area.
